I'M A COLLEGE GRADUATE!

On December 15th, 2017 I graduate from Grand Canyon University!  Which means that I am now part of the GCU Alumni!
I have so much to say about graduation day that I cannot put into one Facebook or instagram post. There's so many people I need to thank and so many memories I have to reflect back on. Which is why I chose to make a blog post about this amazing day instead.
First things first! I may have graduated from GCU but I will always consider myself a University of Hawai'i wahine! Once a warrior, always a warrior am I right?! I was so blessed to attend my dream school my freshman year of college and I wouldn't change it for the world. During my time there I met so many amazing people and got to experience so many great things. There's not enough words to explain my time there and how much happiness it brought me to be apart of the UH Manoa community. In particular, I am so happy to have made life long friends at this school.

Lokelani Floor Nine FOREVA! (talk about a glow up)
What started off as random placement in a dorm, ended up being some of the best friendships I'll ever have. Shiina and Takara are missing from the bottom picture but they were there in our hearts! I was able to see some of my best friends graduate this past spring and I could not be more proud of them!

Another great friend who've I've grown even closer to is Caitlin! We had so many adventures freshman year and have continued to make memories since then. Wouldn't trade her for the world!
There are many more people I met in Hawai'i who have made a big impact on my life and they know who they are, so thank you!
Another random placement turned to friendship! My first year at GCU I met these amazing girls and I have loved them ever since! My first year and impression of GCU would not have been the same if they weren't placed in my life to be honest. I'm so glad to call them my friends!
I'm even happier to say I got to share graduation day with one of them! Love you Edie!
This girl right here literally carried me through college and I can't thank her enough.
No, seriously.. I'm so clumsy that she has actually had to carry me places around campus lol
But besides carrying me physically, she also carried me mentally and emotionally. She's been there for all my breakdowns and the times I wanted to call it quits, and she reminded me why I started this journey in the first place. SO MANY TIMES. Imani is the best friend I could have ever asked for.

I can't leave out my fellow healthcare major friends! At one time or another I have had deep and meaningful conversations with each of these people that reminded me why I am choosing to pursue medicine. Austin is my go to when I feel like I'm not good enough. Becca can make me laugh when my science classes are breaking me down. And last but not least.. Denisia is the one who helps me push forward. No matter how hard this road has been for her she keeps going and that inspires me to do the same.

Lindsee has been a great friend of mine throughout my journey here at GCU. She's become more than a friend really, she's my sister. My time at GCU would not be the same without her. She's helped me remain strong in my faith, constantly reassured me of myself, helped me find the good in every situation and overall just become a better person. Even after she graduated, she put in the effort to be there for me all the way to the end of my undergrad career and I know she'll always be there for me.

This is Ana. She's been a great friend to me for about 7 years now.
I will say that we are both so busy that we unfortunately don't get to talk too often. However, Ana is someone i consider to a best friend to me. The first two photos are of us were taken a few months after my cancer diagnosis when I was going through chemo. I have to thank Ana separately because she literally saved my life. Many people don't understand how hard it is to go through a cancer diagnosis and how emotionally challenging it is. It broke me down completely. I haven't talked about this to a lot of people, maybe just a handful. During my treatment I felt that I hadn't become myself anymore and I hated it. I hated it so much that I just didn't want to live anymore. I was convinced I was going to die to be honest. So I thought about ending my life multiple times. Unfortunately, one day I had come to the decision that I was going to do it. That same day Ana and our friend Racheal came to visit me in the hospital. My face was swollen from the steroids I had to take, mouth swollen due to mouth sores, and I was bald from my chemo. I didn't recognize myself and I hated it, I started to hate myself. But that day Ana sat and talked with me and caught me up on all I was missing in school. Mid conversation she stopped and looked at me, like really looked at me. I thought she was thinking about how bad I looked, but instead she said something I did not expect. She told me that I was beautiful and that she loved me. She told me that I had purpose in this world and that she couldn't wait for me to beat this stupid disease and thrive in life. Ana kept talking about these great things I would one day accomplish and she asked me to promise her I wouldn't give up, no matter what. I promised her that day and I also promised myself. She literally saved my life. If she hadn't decided to visit me that day and say those words to me I don't know if I would be here writing this post. So thank you Ana, for being a friend when I needed it the most. I can never thank you enough for always being there for me, even when life gets busy.

The last friend I wanna thank is Amberlee. We met my sophomore year of high school and have been sisters ever since. We didn't even like each other when we first met actually. But after a few months of having debates in English class and being forced to sit next to each other we realized we were more alike than we were wanting to admit. We bonded over nutella, coffee, and yearbook club. The next year I got my diagnosis and she was there for me EVERY step of the way. She cried with me, spend nights at the hospital with me (even trading out with my mom so she could get some rest some nights), encouraged me, pushed me and loved me. She loved me even when I yelled at her out of frustration because of my limitations due to chemo and surgery. She helped me tell my parents about my mental health issues at the time and she stuck up for me when I couldn't do it for myself. She's still outshining herself now.. driving 40 minutes to come to a birthday dinner at Hot n Juicy even though she's allergic to shellfish... making it to my graduation to congratulate me and cry some more lol (even though she went to the brunch place on first on accident, although that was MY fault haha). She's a forever friend and I love her so much.

My mom and my grandmother have been my shoulders to cry on throughout my undergrad years! Well, really my whole life to be honest. They have loved me since the day I was born and they keep loving me more every day (I assume lol). I know that whenever I need to vent or need some advice I can go to them. I could write about these two amazing women for days! I love them so much and I couldn't ask for a better mom or a better grandma. They've taught me some great life lessons throughout college that I can carry out the rest of my life. I wouldn't be me without you mom.

To my Dad. It's been a rough couple of years but I love you. You have taught me a lot since childhood and you loved me before I was even born. Thanks to this man I know how to cook, how to fight and the importance of sports and friendship. We've been through a lot, and even though you drive me crazy sometimes I will love you forever!

My Uncle Trav and Aunt Tammy are like another set of parents to me. I can't even count how many times I have called my uncle when I was going through it, just so he could make me laugh. He's a great uncle, but an also an even better extra father figure in my life. These two were as proud as my own parents on my graduation day and I am so glad to have shared this day with them! And cousin Tyler of course! He's just as funny as his dad and maybe even crazier haha.
Thank you to my Granny Rita and Grandpa Skip. They have showed me so much love throughout my entire life. I am so glad to have them be part of my life and my big day! I love them very much and I am so blessed to have them as grandparents.
I first wanna say that this picture is rare because no one can ever catch my grandpa smiling, let alone laughing in a picture! I'm so grateful to my family for supporting me, loving me and making this day better than I could have imagined. I wouldn't be who I am today without these wonderful people.

Someone that I cannot thank enough is my great grandmother. She taught me the value of an education from a very young age. This woman is absolutely incredible and was like a mother to me. She taught me how to read, write, braid hair and so much more. There is so much to say about her, and I don't think I can ever say enough. She accepted me for who I was and was my number one supporter from day one. Unfortunately, she was not here to spend this special day with my because God called her home last year. But since the beginning of my college journey (really the beginning of my life) she has constantly been there for me. We talked to each other weekly up until her passing. She believed in my dreams even before I did and has encouraged me to never stop chasing them until they become reality. This degree isn't just for me, it's for her too. I can't imagine even getting to this point in my life without having her in it. God blessed me with more years with her than I thought I would get honestly, and I am so grateful for the many memories we made together. I hope to be at least half the woman she was and I sure hope that I have made her proud.

Lastly, I want to thank myself. Who else pulled those all nighters and woke up for 7am classes?! I have been my biggest critic thus far and I have been very hard on myself throughout college. I didn't believe I could get to this day. I thought so many times I would give up. The first picture is a senior photo from high school and the second a senior photo from undergrad. Talk about a glow up! (thank goodness for one though haha). But the people I thanked above are the reason I made it through. They believed in me, which lead me to believe in myself.

I sure hope I made little Abriel proud.
Here's to the next adventure..

Happy Thanksgiving!

Hi guys– sorry for the crickets. It’s been a crazy semester for me and if you know me, you know I have been stressed to the max. A lot has happened over the past few months and some things have changed as well, which has kept me from blogging as much as I wanted to. However, sometimes life changes and you just gotta go with it– and that’s exactly what I'm doing. I'm just trying to figure it out day by day. So far, so good.

\
But this post isn't an update post, but a thanksgiving post! I can't believe that the year has flown by so fast and that thanksgiving is here ALREADY! 2018 will be here before we know it. And just thinking about that today reminds me to be thankful for the lessons I have learned in 2017. I've learned so much in school, from my friends, and from myself. It's been a crazy year, but a good one. Not the best year and not the easiest, but I woke up today and that is something in itself to be thankful for. Another thing I am really thankful for is the holiday gathering experiences I had as a kid. I miss getting together with family and everyone helping to cook the food and singing songs all throughout the house! The past two years I have spent the holidays much differently than I usually would and it has been a hard adjustment. It has, however, made me grateful that I even got the chance to experience the holidays the way that I used to, because many people never get that. I hope that the holidays I have with my own family one day are filled with that much joy, love and laughter. Today has been a very relaxed day for me and I got to see some family, which is something I am always grateful for.

But now that thanksgiving is over, you know what that means?! It's Christmas time!

Sending love to everyone and I hope your thanksgiving was wonderful!

Life Update!

I just wanted to post a little life update! I am currently working 2 jobs, one part time and the other full time. AKA I work 60 hours a week. I am also a fun time student with 5 online classes. I am supposed to graduate from undergrad in 3 months, but right after I am continuing to finish pre-med classes. It has been rough and I won't lie and say it's not. But we all struggle. The key is to have amazing support. Surround yourself with people who truly care about your wellbeing. I am so glad I have the support I do. I definitely would not be able to do all of this without them.

#DoctorGoals

If you are a pre-med student or you know someone who is, then you should know about DoctorGoals! Dr. Trot, the creator of DoctorGoals, is a resident physician who has a passion for medicine and for helping others who share that passion. If you want to know her story and how she got involved with medicine check it out here :)

I just want to start out by saying that I was not asked to write this post, I truly just love the brand and what it stands for. I am so glad that I came across the DoctorGoals instagram page one day because it has changed my life already.

Make sure that you give these pages a follow because I guarantee you, you won't regret it!

Since I came across DoctorGoals, I have found and connected with more people who are in the healthcare field, or are working towards being in it. I have seen that I am not the only one who struggles with certain aspects of being a pre-med, and an untraditional one at that!

One of my favorite parts about being apart of the #DoctorGoals fam, is that you can sign up for a pre-med newsletter. Dr. Trot sends out tips, strategies, encouragement and more! There have been days when I questioned whether or not I was good enough, or even smart enough to become a physician. However, after getting the newsletters from Dr. Trot, I find that I am more confident in my abilities and what I will have to offer as a physician. I know that I have a long road ahead of me, but she reminds me that I am not alone in this, and that she too struggled as a pre-med once.

The DoctorGoals website that she has created is absolutely amazing! It consists of a blog, resources, podcasts, and more! I suggest you take a look for yourself to see all that she has to offer!
Just click here :)

Lastly, if you couldn't tell, my FAVORITE part is this shirt! It is one of the comfiest shirts I have ever owned! It's perfect for anything and everything. From studying to going to the gym! 10/10 recommend this shirt. She's got a new pre-order opening up THIS Sunday, July 30th. AND there is a new color option that is going to be available! If you know my favorite color, then you know exactly what it is! You won't want to miss out because she only does pre-orders every few months! Click here to get more information!

If you're a pre-med student then you definitely need to check out DoctorGoals, and if you're not but know someone who is, then you should be telling them about it!

A Seniors Perspective: Letter to Freshman Self

In about five months, I will be calling myself an alumni of Grand Canyon University. I will be all "grown up" and facing the real adult world, with real adult problems, that my college experience may or may not have prepared me for. Looking back, I have no regrets at all in my college experience. But there are a few things I wish I knew when I was a college freshman. I decided to reflect on them in a letter to my freshman self.

Abriel,

First things first. Call your mom. She’s probably blowing up your phone already. It gets annoying sometimes, but you’re going to need her. I mean, give her a break, you are almost 3000 miles from home. There’s going to be some moments where you want to punch yourself for going to school so far away, but she'll remind you why it's worth it.

College is going to take more of you than you ever expected. In a few short years, you’re going to become an entirely different person. Take a good look in the mirror now. Not only will your hair be longer than you thought, but in four years’ time, you’ll be almost unrecognizable. You lose yourself a little along the way. Don't worry though, sometime later, once you’ve realized who you don’t want to be, you’re going to find yourself again. You’re going to be new and different—not at all who you thought you’d be– but someone even better. Someone who enjoys studying, who likes matching pajama sets and who calls her mom at least every other day.

Now, I won't lie to you and say that your first year, or any year after that is smooth and easy going. Because it definitely is not. You're going to leave the University of Hawai'i (shocker I know), to transfer to Grand Canyon University. Although you thought you would never leave, it is probably one of the best decisions you've ever made. Not only do you keep the amazing friends you made in Hawai'i, but you're going to meet great people at GCU too. Hang on tight to those floor 9 Lokelani girls though, because those are your people. We got really lucky with them. You'll change your major about 3 times, and that's okay. It may seem stressful at the time, but you figure it all out and in the end you are happy you didn't stick with your first choice.

Make sure you go to all of your classes because you are going to need those attendance points. You are so smart, and there is no reason for you to get a C in a class because you would rather sleep in than show up to a morning class. And while we are on the subject, stop scheduling early morning classes, for your sake. Also, do all of your homework or you will regret it!

Go to office hours. Seriously, do it. If you ever thought that your high school classes were hard, you had no idea about what college is like. Professors in college are not like teachers in high school; they are not going to remember your name from just seeing you sitting in class.

Please, for your own sanity, find alone time. Find things you like to do by yourself. Read or just sit on your bed and watch Netflix, find time to be by yourself and recharge! You're going to need it, trust me.

It's okay not to be okay. It's okay to cry. You will find that you are going to be challenged mentally, emotionally, and physically. More than you ever thought you would be. You can and you will get through it. That doesn't mean that you can't take time to feel emotions. You're strong, but you don't have to put on a fake smile and pretend that nothing is wrong.

Remember to call your grandparents. You don’t realize now how limited of a time you have with them. Unfortunately, you will find that out sooner than you thought. Your junior year is going to be your toughest year because you'll lose your bestfriend in the whole world, granny. And although you didn't think you could finish without her, you'll find that losing her pushes you to finish even harder and stronger. She sees your effort and she loves you. Remember that.

I could go on and on, but you don’t really need me to. You’re going to be fine. Soak it all up and remember, it goes faster than you would have ever imagined. College may take a lot out of you, but it’s going to give it all back in completely new ways. Whatever you do, don t give up.

Love,
Your Senior Self

I'll be starting my last semester of senior year in a few weeks.  I have my best friends at my side. I talk to my mom probably more than anyone else. I truly thought I had my life planned out, and now I’m going in a completely different direction. But I am happy with my life and with who I am. I can't wait to see where life takes me after this.

HAPPY MOTHERS DAY!

"Not always eye to eye.. but always heart to heart."

Happy mothers day to all the mothers out there!
I wish that I could be with my mother day, especially since I haven't spent a mothers day with her in FOUR YEARS! Although, I have had very good reason to not be with her the past 3. Every mothers day of my college years has been spent with my great grandmother, and this is the first year without her here. It's a hard day. I woke up and immediately thought "I need to call granny!" and then realized that I could not. And although this made me extreme sad, it also made me remember that not only do I still have my mother, but I have 3 other grandmothers, and MANY other mother figures who love me and who also care for me. Although I lost a big part of my life and heart, I am not alone. I am not unloved or forgotten about. And I just wanted to remind all the mothers who have made a big impact in my life, that you are never forgotten about. I think of you often, even if I don't speak with you all the time. Not only that, but I love each and every one of you unconditionally and I am so glad that you are apart of my life. There are not enough gifts or ways to say I love you, to truly show the appreciation for what you do for your children every single day. I can't thank you enough for all the love and compassion we are spoiled with.

To my mother, my backbone, my caretaker, and my biggest supporter (tied with granny because we both know she'd fight you for the title lol). I love you so much. I know our relationship and life has not always been the easiest, especially because we both know I am a handful! But I know that you have done your best, and you have always loved me, and I know you always will. I hope you never forget that everything I am, is because of you. Thanks for being my human incubator ;)
