I can't live without..

To make up for not posting I have decided to partially participate in blogtober! I'm six days late, using the 3rd day prompt, and I may not post everyday but I promise I am going to try!
Now, other than the usual food, water, shelter, family and friends.. I can NOT live without two things.
Coffee and Photos.
(photo from tumblr)

As a photographer it's hard not to be obsessed with photos. I became a photographer so that I could capture memories for others so of course it's been a habit to do so with my own life!

I think my favorite thing about photos is that you can always go back to missed memories. No matter how much time has passed the picture never changes. As a child my great-grandmother has always had 'thousands' of photo albums from when she was little up until after I was born and we would always go through them and she would share stories about all her adventures and her lifetime memories. It's something that I've always loved doing with her and I hope to do so with my great-grandchildren one day too.  Pictures are memories you can relive time and time again. I love it!

Coffee is life. That's all I need to say.

What can't you live without? Please share below because I would love to connect with other bloggers this october :)

College Tips: 9 Study Tips Every Freshman Should Know!

In college, everything changes. I know, shocker right? You no longer get those all those extra credit opportunities and the teachers do not remind you of when things are due all the time. You are responsible for getting things done on time and make sure it's quality work.

Many students learn within the first few weeks that skimming notes or only studying for a half an hour every once in awhile no longer works for them. Studying in college is one of the most important things you can and will do. So here are some tips to help you study the best way possible!

1. Get organized
Write everything down. Yes, that means ALL of your assignments. Writing things down help you to remember. Prioritize and rearrange to do lists according to when something is due and how important it is. Also, always always always keep your desk clean so you can actually find things.

2. Get a study buddy
Preferably someone who won't get you off track and will help you stay focused. Remember that it's sometimes easier to ask someone you sort of know from one of your classes rather than studying with your friends. You two won't have much to talk about other than your class and it's a nice way to make new friends.

3. Take notes by hand
When you're in class, using a laptop tends to be quicker depending on the class you're taking. However, taking notes by hand helps you to remember the material. Something I do is take the notes on my laptop in class and later write them down in a notebook.

4. Study off of flashcards
Doing this is an easy way to study terms and definitions you may need to remember for classes. You're not only studying while you make them but you can also take them anywhere with you.

5. Study as much as possible
Studying everyday is hard but it is so worth it in the end. There's too much material to not study at least once every other day. In college there is always something that needs to be studied.

6. Don't always study from your book
Some classes barely use the book to begin with. Make sure you're paying attention in class and re-read your notes when studying. Taking notes on your lecture and not just what's on the powerpoint can also be very helpful to you.

7. Reward yourself
If you study for an hour without any distractions go get some ice cream or have a fun activity with your friends like the movies or bowling. School doesn't have to be all work and no play. Unless you're a nursing/ pre-med student at my school. Those students have no life.]

8. Set goals
Setting long and short term goals reminds you that all the hard work you're doing has a purpose so be sure to have them.

9. USE YOUR SYLLABUS!!!!!!
I can not stress this last tip enough. Your syllabus tells you exactly how to pass your class, all of the dues dates, exam dates, readings and what part of your grade the assignment counts for. Copy all of your due dates and test dates in a planner or on your calendar so you can see them ahead of time and you won't forget. A lot of students just overlook their syllabus because it's what they did in high school. Your syllabus is your best friend, this I promise you!

Studying in college isn't as hard as it seems, you just have to stay motivated and remember that procrastination is not your friend. If you're a freshman then I can guarantee you that you will feel overwhelmed at first, but I promise it gets easier.

Apologies!

Just a short post to apologize for not blogging for awhile and a quick update. I started my first semester of my sophomore year a week ago and I am still getting used to my school schedule. I promise I'll be back blogging regularly within the next week once I've settled into my schedule.
Update: My sophomore year has been going very well and I'm getting back in the hang of things as far as school goes. As some of you may or may not know I no longer attend the University of Hawai'i  at Manoa but I now go to Grand Canyon University. I'm really missing Hawai'i a lot as of late because it's so different at this school than UH but it has been an okay experience so far. I've truly been putting my own college tips that I've given you all to the test here in my own life. & I've got more college tips posts coming over the next few weeks so be sure to keep checking back for those!

College Tips: Moving Into Your Dorm

It's that time of year... time to pack up and move into your college dorm! The first year of college presents a lot of new challenges, it's easy to get overwhelmed and forget about all the little details! Preparing for the things you can control is very crucial and important for your freshman year! Planning for your move to the dorms ( if you're on campus) can relieve stress for you and your parents!

My first college tips post was about what to bring to your dorms, you can read that here. This post is about how to get your stuff there. As I prepare to move into the dorms at my college for my sophomore year I wanted to share some tips with you guys that I have personally learned and some others have shared with me!

  • First things first, decide what you really need to bring with you. You will have to leave a lot of things at home when moving to college. You have a very limited space and no matter how much you may love everything you own, you just can't bring it all with you! I am begging you, please try and not to overpack. Or else you'll end up looking like this..

And then once you get it all in your dorm you won't have a clue where to start. I've seen it and it is NOT pretty! So try your hardest to avoid it if you can.

  • Keep clothes on hangers if you can. If you're going out of state and have to pack a suitcase for a flight, this is obviously not an option for you. But for those of you who are going to colleges in state and/or driving to your out of state college, this saves lots of time moving in your clothes. All you have to do is fill your closet when you get to your dorm!

  • Similar to the above tip, if you're going to be in state or traveling to your college out of state by car then try to avoid a lot of suitcases. Instead, you can buy vacuum seal bags or the ziploc big bags to help transport your clothes, pillows, etc. Fold clothes that will be going in your drawers at college and place them in the bags. Organizing the bags by what you're going to put in drawers together will really benefit you!

  • Be smart about packing your car if you're driving. Put the heavy things on the bottom and build up from there. You may think this is common sense, but I assure you not everyone thinks to put the heavy items on the bottom. Using things like clothes or bedding to act as cushion between bulky items is very helpful. If you're not smart about packing your car, it'll probably look a little something like this when you pull up to your dorm.

I'm totally kidding but you get what I mean!

  • Plan to arrive on time. If your school has a set time for move-in or gives you a suggested time, then go at that time. It's much easier on you moving in because the school usually has people who can help take things up to your dorm for you and it makes it easier on your parents as well so that they aren't stressing out.

  • Label all of your things. Label your stuff with your name and dorm name with your room number because it makes it easier for the people at the school helping you move in. By doing this you're making sure your stuff gets to the right room and you save a lot of hassle for the people helping you out and they don't have to worry about asking whose stuff is whose.

Hopefully by following these tips you have a much easier move-in! I really do hope these were helpful for any of you and if you've got any more tips I'd love to hear them! Leave your tips in the comments!
